Our grants at work
A critical conversation took centre stage at Wangaratta Magpies Football & Netball Club as young athletes, parents, and coaches gathered for the Tackling Consent Workshop, an initiative made possible through funding from Garry Nash & Co. Community Grants.
The workshop, attended by 180 participants, focused on affirmative consent, respectful relationships, and legal responsibilities. The event featured expert insights from Victoria Police Senior Sergeant Paula Cutler and Youth Specialist Officer Hayley McDonald, alongside an inspiring keynote by former AFL star Alex Rance.
With recent changes to consent laws, the workshop aimed to equip young people with:
- · Practical tools to navigate consent conversations
- · Confidence to call out disrespect in sporting and social settings
- · Knowledge of support services available to the community
The event also highlighted the positive role of sporting clubs in fostering a culture of respect. The strong attendance and post-event feedback reinforced the ongoing need for these discussions, with multiple requests for further workshops in clubs and schools.
Attendees expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage in open and honest discussions about consent. One participant even reached out for further support after the event, demonstrating the real-world impact of this initiative.
This workshop was a testament to the power of community-driven education and would not have been possible without the generous support of Garry Nash & Co. Community Grants.
